Alex led the way deeper into the garden until they met the path he had taken off the main course. "I should not have went off by myself," he said, mainly to himself, but glanced behind for confirmation.
"Thinking about errors in judgement never helps. I think it makes you feel worse, huh?"
He nodded, knowing the older man spoke the truth. Still, he could not help but think of things he could have done to have avoided the situation.
"I walked up this way," he pointed up the path. "For probably five minutes. That's when I first heard someone behind me."
Balam nodded, indicated for Alex to move forward. "Remember I am here and no one can harm you when I am near."
Glancing at his guardian, he gave a brief smile and nodded. Turning back to the path, he took a deep breath and stepped into it, thinking about his last trip through. He touched several plants, remembered the light gust of air that caressed his face.
A sharp crack behind him, caused him to startle and turn. Balam moved him forward with a wave. "It is part of the process Alex. Go."
Several minutes into the journey, he glanced back, saw his guardian had stopped. Balam pointed to a thicket, "This is where you went through Alex. I can see it."
Backtracking, Alex came up alongside the man and saw breaks in several of the plants, showing someone had scrambled through the area.
"I cannot go through, because I'm too large, but you can do it alone. Keep the thought that I am here and call out if you need. I will respond."
Several minutes later, Alex emerged from the other side of the thicket, with only brief moments of anxiety. He grinned at his guardian and handed him a souvenir. The top part of James uniform that had been left behind.
Making their way past rows of vegetables and trees, Alex saw Xilam and the Tell healer stood at the front of the garden area waiting for them. He waved. Balam nodded toward the figures, but returned his attention to his charge. "Are you rid of this boy Alex?"
Alex thought about it a moment before answering, then shrugged. "I don't know. I hope I am.â He paused, knowing the answers he really wanted, were something he would never get. âI think I'll always want to know why he did it."
His guardian glanced down at him and nodded. "You will know then. Xilam can read that boy before he returns to Aerte."
